Scooters are part of the Bali postcard, but they are not compulsory. If you stay in the right part of Uluwatu, you can spend a week here on foot, with the occasional app ride, and never miss a sunset. This is how.

Why skip the scooter?

Uluwatu's roads are steep, winding and busy, and some stretches are unlit at night. Indonesia also requires a valid licence that covers motorbikes, and many travel insurance policies will not cover you without one. For experienced riders, a scooter is freedom. For everyone else, it is the most common way a holiday goes wrong.

Stay central, not remote

Uluwatu is not one village; it is a collection of clifftop areas spread across the Bukit Peninsula. Many beautiful villas are a long way from anything, which is wonderful until you want dinner. The single best decision for a scooter-free trip is to stay in central Uluwatu, on or just off the main Uluwatu road, where cafes, spas and restaurants are on your doorstep.

Nema is right there: tucked down a short lane off the main road, so it is quiet inside but walkable outside.

When to take a ride

For anything beyond walking distance, you have four easy options:

  • Grab or Gojek. Bali's main ride-hailing apps, available as car or motorbike-taxi rides. You see the price and the driver before you book.
  • A local driver. In some areas, local transport rules limit where app drivers can pick up. If that happens, our front desk can help arrange a trusted local driver.
  • A day driver. For a day of temples and beaches, hiring a car and driver for the day is relaxed and good value. Nema works with local transport partners and can arrange it for you.
  • A scooter, if you want one. Experienced riders can rent a scooter through Nema; just ask the front desk.

Ngurah Rai International Airport is about 17 km away. Distance is not the issue; traffic is. Allow extra time, especially in the late afternoon.
